Resricted public access on some parts of Stekenjokk

In 2018 a special protection are was created on Stekenjokk to protect birds during their nesting period against egg thieves. Some areas on Stekenjokk are restricted from public access during parts of the year.

The purpose of the restrictions are to protect rare bird species during the nesting season. In the past egg thieves have systematically stolen thousands of eggs and sold through an international network. The rare species include the long tailed skua, snow owl and rough legged buzzard that nest in the area. The eggs of these and other species can render large sums of money from collectors and are sought after internationally. The Wilderness Road makes this area specially vulnerable as it is one of the few areas where you gain access to this environment and these species straight from the road.

Swedish National Television, SVT did a documentary about this in 2017. Read more here

While visiting the Wilderness Road, you are not allowed to leave the paved road while passing through some parts of Stekenjokk in the mountains between 10th of June - 10th of July. You are allowed to stop at and walk on parking spaces, organized BBQ spots by information and sign posts and some trekking paths, including the trekking and fishing path to Övre Raavrenjaevrie from Hamptjärn.

The County administrative Board of Jämtland (Länsstyrelsen Jämtland) are in charge of the protection area and during the nesting season they will be conducting increased surveillance in the area. You can get a special license during the period from Länsstyrelsen.
